Description |
Derby North is the commuter area of the city and home to many workers who go south to the Rolls Royce Aerospace factory and the city's railworks. The seat is more residential than Derby South and includes some of the city's more desirable housing in places such as Allestree and Darley. But it also contains the higher proportion of the city's council housing, much of it in Mackworth and Chaddesden. Although held by Labour continuously from its creation in 1950 until 1983, the Conservatives came close in Derby North in 1959, February 1974 and 1979 (Labour winning by just 214). Philip Whitehead, long-time MP (and now East Midlands MEP) was defeated in 1983 by Tory Greg Knight who doubled his majority in 1987. He in turn held on until 1997 when the Labour landslide brought in former Derby council leader Bob Laxton by a substantial 10,615 majority. There was a small swing against him in 2001 and his majority is now just under 7,000.
