Description |
This seat is the political home of Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble, who won it in a 1990 by-election. The northern half of the constituency takes in the whole of Craigavon Borough Council, which includes the towns of Portadown and Lurgan, as well as the southern shores of Lough Neagh. Portadown is best known to outsiders as home to the contentious Orange Order's Drumcree parade which has been barred since 1997 from passing along the nationalist Garvaghy Road. The southern half takes in part of Banbridge District Council, including the town of Banbridge itself, with the constituency name being taken from the River Bann, which flows into Lough Neagh. Elsewhere, the main industries are farming and tourism, since much of the constituency is rural. The tourist industry is based on the attractions of Lough Neagh, the largest fresh-water lake in the British Isles, with the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre situated in the constituency. Both the lough and the River Bann are famous for coarse fishing . Mr Trimble saw his majority cut to some 2,000 votes in 2001 and in the Assembly elections of 2003, the two main unionist parties were neck and neck here.
