Description |
This new constituency comprises the whole of the old Moray seat, including two wards split with the old Gordon seat, plus two wards from the old Gordon seat. The constituency now covers the whole of the Moray Council area. The seat stretches inland from the spectacular North Sea coast with its series of fishing ports, and golf courses to a rural hinterland dominated by agriculture and whisky. The constituency lies at the heart of Scotland's whisky production with distilleries manufacturing many notable Speyside malts. Two important issues affect this seat: the decline of the fishing industry with EU restrictions on quotas and tie-up periods has had a severe impact over the past few years; and an MoD review of airfields. This has led to cuts at Kinloss and Lossiemouth. The largest town in the region is Elgin, a market town which attracts its fair share of tourists. A more surprising and decidedly less conventional magnet for visitors is the Findhorn Foundation, a New Age community which has drawn visitors from all over the world. The seat now takes in Keith, a small market town with its roots in the textile industry, but now dependent on agriculture and whisky production.
