Description |
Lochaber seat along with eight wards from the old Ross, Skye & Inverness West seat, including two wards that were split between the two old constituencies. For the first time in two decades, the city of Inverness is no longer split between two far flung constituencies, but wholly contained within this one. Inverness has undergone a much-needed transformation in the last 30 years; it now commands attention both as a city and capital of the Gaidhealtachd. It is widely acknowledged as a dynamic and vibrant place making a growing contribution to Scottish business, civic and cultural life. Some 15 miles along the coast, Nairn has two 18-hole championship courses, including the Nairn Golf Club which staged the Walker Cup in 1999. The town boasts some of the top beaches in Scotland and cleanest bathing waters in Britain. Historically, between Nairn and Inverness lies the site of the Battle of Culloden, the last land battle on mainland Britain. The seat has geographical significance too. Badenoch and Strathspey are often called the gateway to the Highlands. While the Cairngorm Mountains, in the newly formed Cairngorm National Park, provide some of the best winter sports facilities in Europe; salmon fishing, deer shooting and landed estates bring tourists to the area in their droves all year round. Meanwhile for wildlife watching, the waters of the Moray Firth are home to one of only two dolphin colonies in the UK.
