Description |
This new constituency contains wards from five of the previous Glasgow seats. There are three wards from the old Glasgow Kelvin, two from the old Glasgow Shettleston, two from the old Glasgow Govan, one shared between the old Glasgow Govan and Glasgow Shettleston, and one shared between the old Glasgow Rutherglen and Glasgow Shettleston. The constituency straddles the River Clyde stretching west into Kelvingrove and as far as Toryglen in the south. This seat has the city's largest proportion of ethnic minority residents. It has two of the city's three universities - Strathclyde and Caledonian ' plus most of the main retail and business districts. It also covers an inner city area which contains many of Glasgow's tourist attractions, such as the imposing medieval cathedral, some beautiful and architecturally important tenement properties, as well as large Victorian villas and the vibrant Merchant City area. This was once the haunt of the city's Tobacco Lords, the businessmen who built their own - and the city's - fortune on the tobacco trade with the New World. It is also recognised as having one of the best ranges of shopping outlets in the UK, which has helped to boost the city's reputation as a tourist destination.
