Description This constituency consists of the old Caithness, Sutherland & Easter Ross constituency plus Ferindonald ward from the old Ross, Skye & Inverness West constituency. Alness & Ardross ward is now wholly within Caithness, Sutherland & Easter Ross. The old constituency of the same name has been slightly expanded to include the small town of Alness; this is the most northerly constituency on the Scottish mainland, covering a vast area. Caithness forms the northern tip of this seat and the rest is made up of farming and fishing communities around Thurso and Wick. Dounreay nuclear power station is also located here, and tourism is helped by the presence of John O'Groats. The mountains and moorlands of Sutherland to the west and south are bleaker in appearance but also attract considerable numbers of holiday makers captivated by the rugged countryside. The Easter Ross element of the seat is much the smallest in terms of area but is far more densely populated, including the town of Invergordon, home to many workers in oil-related industries. The addition of Alness has brought more light industry to the seat including the Dalmore distillery. In the west, Lochinver and Kinlochbervie are important fishing ports.
