Description This seat in Wales' second city has been held by Labour since 1922 and it is Labour's second safest seat in Wales - after Blaenau Gwent. Since 1974, it has been held by the senior Labour MP Donald Anderson, who also holds the powerful position as Chairman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, although he is standing down at the 2005 election. In 2001, he held the seat with a 53 per cent majority of the vote, polling more than 16, 000 votes over his closes Plaid Cymru rival. The Conservatives came second here in 1997, but in every poll since then they have been overtaken by the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru. At the last assembly elections they fell into fifth place, being overtaken by the UKIP. Swansea East contains the city's main industrial areas, the docks and several large council estates. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and Morriston Hospital with its specialist cardiac and burns units, are also here. A new 20,000 all-seater football and rugby stadium is being built on former industrial waste ground at Landore in the constituency. This is expected to open in July 2005.
