Description |
The Gower peninsula makes up the bulk of this seat. In 1956 it became the first part of the UK to be made an area of outstanding natural beauty. The coastline and beaches of Rhossili and Oxwich attract many thousands of tourists; as a result tourism is a major employer. It also provides a home for many well-off Swansea commuters. This has not, however, made Gower a Conservative area. Although the Tories were a close second at the height of their Welsh success in 1983, Labour maintains a firm grip here. Edwina Hart is the local assembly member, former Minister for Finance, now Minister for Social Justice and Regeneration. Although the constituency as a whole is predominantly English-speaking, the inland industrial area of the Lliw Valley and the strong working-class communities of Gorseinon, Pontardulais and Pontardawe, have a high number of Welsh speakers. This seat also contains the "Mumbles", named after the huge rocks which protrude out into Swansea Bay. This is a popular seaside resort and has a large prosperous residential area in it. The Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones is one of Gower's most famous daughters.
