Congress established U.S. circuit courts of appeals for each of the nine judicial circuits
and assigned the sitting judge of the U.S. Circuit Courts for the Ninth Circuit to sit also
on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, effective June 16, 1891. The act
also authorized an additional judgeship for the Ninth Circuit's new court.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit is a federal court with appellate
jurisdiction over the district courts in the following districts:
* District of Alaska
* District of Arizona
* Central, Eastern, Northern and Southern Districts of California
* District of Hawaii
* District of Idaho
* District of Montana
* District of Nevada
* District of Oregon
* Eastern and Western Districts of Washington
It also has appellate jurisdiction over the following territorial courts:
* District Court of Guam
* District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands
Effective January 21, 2009, the Court Security Improvement Act of 2007 will eliminate one
of the allotted 12 seats on the D.C. Circuit and add a 29th seat to the Ninth Circuit.
