This electorate is named after Charles O'Connor, Western Australia's first Chief Engineer. O'Connor was responsible for many of the state's early public works, including the re-building of Fremantle Harbour, and the water supply line to the goldfields. After incessant criticism over construction of the pipeline, O'Connor committed suicide, his final note including instructions on the pipeline's completion.
