Description |
India's capital and largest commercial center recognized legally as both a Union Territory and 'Megacity' by the "States Reorganization Act" of 1956 and the Seventh Amendment to the Constitution.
Though technically a Union Territory entitled to just a Lieutenant Governor who acts as agent of the President of India, its megacity and "National Capital Territory" (NCT) status warranted the addition of a Chief Minister and a legislature. Administration of the city of New Delhi itself is shared between the federal government and a local one.
Delhi was first made capital of the British Raj when it was moved in great secrecy from Calcutta on December 12, 1911.
