An autonomous region (district or "okruga" [о́круг]; of which there are 4 in Russia) is one of 85 entities demarcated within 9 large federal districts in Russia. Okrugas or okrugs were inherited by post Soviet Russia from the Imperial Russia of the 1920s (the Soviet Union had abolished okrugs on July 30, 1930).
