| Description |
The district is one of 11 created as a result of the 2007 District Reform in Saxony-Anhalt which passed on October 6, 2005, taking effect on July 1, 2007. The new district incorporated the previous districts of Aschersleben-Staßfurt (its Falkenstein/Harz subdivision was left intact), Bernburg and Schönebeck. The number of municipalities decreased from 76 to 53 between January 1, 2008 and July 15, 2009, and seven administrative communities were dissolved and one collective municipality was founded by January 1, 2010.
