Description |
The Assembly of the West Herzegovina Canton is the supreme governing authority of West Herzegovina Canton. It is one of three Croat-dominant cantons in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its members are directly elected by residents of the four municipalities that constitute the Canton. The Assembly appoints by majority vote the Canton's Premier and selects his/her ministers. The Assembly consists of 23 members who serve a four-year term. The Canton uses the same symbols as those used by the internationally unrecognized parastate, the Croatian Republic of Herceg-Bosna (Zastava Hrvatske Republike Herceg-Bosne, founded in 1991 and forcibly abolished in 1994). The symbols are a variation of the Croatian flag. Use of these symbols were banned after they were judged unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court of the Federation on July 7, 1998. The cantonal authorities still defiantly hoist these symbols, however, along with Canton 10.
