The President is both the chief of state and head of government. He exercises supreme command of the Public Force, which is the nation's police and national defense body (the Costa Rica Army was abolished on December 1, 1948). Two vice presidents are elected on the same ticket with the President, and serve each for one four-year term only, as well as the President.
