The representative of the Monarch of of the Kingdom of Ireland (i.e. the Monarch of England) and head of the executive of the Kingdom of Ireland. Charged with consolidating centralized control of territory in Ireland during the Tudor conquest. From 1691, following the Williamite Wars, charged principally with overseeing and steering the Irish Parliament. Known by different names with some variations throughout, predominantly:
• Viceroy of Ireland (throughout)
• Chief Governor of Ireland (throughout)
• Lord Deputy of Ireland
• Lord Lieutenant of Ireland
There were several intermittent periods during which there was no appointed viceroy, in which case executive authority was vested in the Lords Justices sworn by the Privy Council of Ireland.
