Statewide partisan elective office from the establishment of Statehood untl consitutional change in 1948
In 1948, the Colorado State Constitution was amended to provide for an elected state board of education with powers to set up qualifications for and selection of the Commissioner of Education and a professional staff for the Department of Education.
In 1950 the position of Superintendent of Public Instruction was replaced by an appointed Commissioner of Eduction.
