The president is the executive arm of the nation and serves for seven years, unlimited terms. Tajikistan has known only two presidents since the office was created in 1990; the first was Qahhor Mahkamov (November 30, 1990 – August 31, 1991), who was deposed by coup d'etat; the nation's second, Emomali Rahmon, has been president since November 16, 1994.
