Description |
Captains Regents are elected every six months by San Marino's legislative body, the Grand and General Council. The Council will select two Regents from opposing parties from the ranks of the Grand and General Council. This has been the tradition since these positions where established on December 12, 1243.
They are considered heads of state and their power is mainly symbolic. They are elected from the ranks of the Grand and General Council. Their main function is to supervise proceedings at the Grand and General Council, the Congress of State, which is the nation's executive arm, and the Council of XII, which acts as the nation's judiciary.
