The President is head of state, head of the government and head of Beninese Armed Forces. Though the Constitution of Benin adopted on December 23, 1956 grants the president a mandate to serve for five years, renewable only once, the current president's autocratic style lead many observers to expect a reversal of the constitution's two-term rule.
