Description |
The Chancellor (or officially, the Federal Chancellor) is Germany's Head of Government and Chief Executive leader. He or she is elected by a majority of members of the Bundestag upon recommendation of the President. The Chancellor's position is only made official when he or she receives a certificate of appointment from the President at Bellevue Palace and sworn in by the President of the Bundestag.
The Chancellor subsequently revisits Bellevue Palace with proposed members of his or her cabinet, which is called the Federal Cabinet or Federal Government (Bundeskabinett or Bundesregierung). Each Federal Cabinet member must receive certificates of appointment before they can be called 'official'.
The Chancellor's term of office generally corresponds with the legislative period of the Bundestag, and may be renewed indefinitely.
