Second cousin thrice removed of James Madison; third cousin of Henry Lee; first cousin thrice removed of Zachary Taylor; cousin of Edgar Bailey Woolfolk. Democrat. Member of Missouri state senate, 1897-1901; Missouri state attorney general, 1909-13; Governor of Missouri, 1913-17. Contender for nomination for Vice President of the United States on the Democratic ticket in 1916; entered several primaries against Thomas W. Marshall, the incumbent, and lost each state. Died in Eureka, St. Louis County, Mo., July 9, 1949. Interment at City Cemetery, Bowling Green, Mo.
