InfoSTEVENSON, John White, (son of Andrew Stevenson), a Representative and a Senator from Kentucky; born in Richmond, Va., May 4, 1812; attended Hampden-Sidney Academy, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1832; studied law; admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Vicksburg, Miss; moved to Covington, Kenton County, Ky., in 1841; county attorney; member, State house of representatives 1845-1849; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1849; one of three commissioners appointed to revise the civic and criminal code of the State 1850-1851; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1852 and in 1856; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1857-March 3, 1861); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1860; lieutenant governor of Kentucky in 1867; became Governor in 1867, upon the death of the Governor and was subsequently elected Governor in 1868 and served until 1871, when he resigned, having been elected a Senator; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1871, to March 3, 1877; was not a candidate for reelection; chairman, Committee on Revolutionary Claims (Forty-fourth Congress); professor in the Cincinnati Law School; president of the American Bar Association 1884-1885; died in Covington, Ky., August 10, 1886; interment in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio.
