Info | Scofield (1842-1925) was born in Pennsylvania, where he worked on the family farm and lumber mill until he quit school at age 13 to become a printer's apprentice. During the Civil War Scofield enlisted in a Pennsylvania regiment and his demonstration of leadership earned him promotions to captain and then major. Captured at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, Scofield was a prisoner for ten months. After the war he moved to Oconto, and in 1876 he became a partner in a lumber business. Scofield was a state senator from 1887-1890 and in a contest against Robert M. La Follette in 1896 he won the Republican nomination for governor. Scofield served as governor for two terms and retired from active politics in 1901.
Edward Scofield (March 28, 1842 – February 3, 1925) was an American politician who served as the 19th governor of Wisconsin.
Scofield was born in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. He fought in the American Civil War as a member of the 11th Pennsylvania Reserves and eventually rose to the rank of major. He moved to Oconto, Wisconsin, in 1867. Scofield entered politics when he was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate in 1886. He was elected governor of the state in 1896 and served two terms. He died in his home in Oconto at age 83.
Scofield was the last of several Civil War veterans to serve as Governor of Wisconsin.
