InfoAs a professor of political science and public policy, Jennifer Lawless devotes her life to educating the leaders of tomorrow.

Born in Queens and raised in Middletown, New York, Jen is a product of the public school system. She has always believed that every child should have access to a high-quality public education and the opportunity to succeed.

She also values higher education. Jen graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, with a B.A. in political science. She went on to receive an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University. A nationally recognized expert on women’s involvement in politics, she is co-author of the book, It Takes a Candidate. She has also published articles in various political science journals and has issued a policy report on the barriers that oftentimes preclude Americans from running for office.

In 1998, Jen began working for the Women’s Housing and Economic Development Corporation, a non-profit organization in the South Bronx. Their mission is to provide the vocational and educational training and services necessary to enable the transition from welfare to work. Her work with public assistance recipients fueled Jen’s desire to use public service as a means to improve the status quo.

Since moving to Rhode Island to teach at Brown University, Jen has fallen in love with the state. She cannot imagine a better place to live and work. Jen currently resides in Cranston. She feels honored, privileged, and excited to meet every citizen in Rhode Island’s 2nd District over the course of her campaign.
