Representative Nelson Starkey was elected in 1978. He was born on June 24, 1929, received his B.S. Degree from the University of North Alabama, and pursued graduate studies in history and political science at Mississippi State University. He and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children: Cheryl, Trey, and Pat. Representative Starkey, a retired Naval Aviator, is a member of the Rotary Club and American Legion, and is Vice President of the Florence/Lauderdale Industrial Expansion Committee. Distinguished as the recipient of the 1993 "Montgomery Advertiser Meritorious Public Service Award" and the 1978 University of North Alabama "Alumnus of the Year," he has served as past President of the University of North Alabama Alumni Association, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Florence Hospital
