Info | Rickey R. Hendon represents the 5th District in Chicago, Illinois. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1992 and currently serves as Assistant Majority Leader. He was appointed as Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee and is an active member of the Insurance, Gaming and Energy committees.
During the 96th General Assembly, he sponsored several noteworthy pieces of legislation including a bill to encourage those with a desire to turn their lives around by establishing a fund to buy back guns and add participants’ names to a list which will be distributed to vendors receiving stimulus or state capital plan monies for employment purposes. He also helped to pass the state’s capital plan – the first such plan in more than 10 years – to help turn around Illinois’ economy and create sustainable jobs.
Prior to being elected to the State Senate, Hendon served as Alderman of the 27th Ward, and was appointed Secretary/Treasurer of the Cook County Forest Preserve by former Cook County Board President George Dunne on June 6, 1988.
Additionally, Hendon has served in numerous other positions, including Chairman of the Westside Black Elected Officials.
Senator Hendon was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up on the west side in the City of Chicago. He is known for his passion for softball and is an accomplished writer and producer of music.
