Info | READE, Edwin Godwin, a Representative from North Carolina; born on a farm in Person County, N.C., November 13, 1812; completed preparatory studies; engaged in agricultural pursuits; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1835 and commenced practice in Roxboro, Person County, N.C.; elected as the candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1857); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1856; served in the Confederate Senate in 1863 by appointment of Governor Vance; president of the reconstruction convention which met in Raleigh in 1865; associate justice of the supreme court of North Carolina 1868-1879; engaged in banking in Raleigh, N.C., and died there October 18, 1894; interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
