Info | born Isabella Selmes in Boone County, Ky., March 22, 1886; attended the public schools and Miss Chapin’s School, in New York City; homesteaded near Tyrone, N.Mex., in 1910; served as chairman of the Women’s Land Army of New Mexico in 1918; moved to Tucson, Ariz., in 1923; Democratic National committeewoman from Arizona; owner and operator of a cattle ranch; owner of Gilpin Air Lines, Los Angeles, Calif., 1929-1934; in 1929 established the Arizona Inn (a hotel resort) in Tucson; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lewis W. Douglas; reelected to the Seventy-fourth Congress and served from October 3, 1933, to January 3, 1937; was not a candidate for renomination in 1936; member of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial Commission; retired from political activities; died in Tucson, Ariz., December 18, 1953; interment in the family cemetery on the Selmes farm in Boone County, Ky., twenty miles from Covington, Ky.
