Info | Year of birth is speculative. His voter registration in April 2022 indicated he was 70.
Mayor Thomas J. George took office as Lakewood's Chief Executive on January 1, 2004 after sixteen years of service as a Lakewood City Councilman.
Mr. George attended Lakewood Public Schools and graduated from Lakewood High School in 1969. He furthered his education at Ohio State University in Columbus, where he was a reporter for the student newspaper, the Lantern. He graduated with a B.A. in Journalism in 1973.
His government career includes positions as Senior Planner for the Cuyahoga County Office of Employment and Training; Deputy Director, Ohio Department of Highway Safety; Deputy Director of the Ohio Attorney General's Cleveland Office and Assistant to the Director/Deputy Director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
During his four terms on Council, Mr. George served at Vice-President and Chairman of Council's influential Finance Committee. As Chair of Council's Finance Committee, in addition to overseeing twelve budget hearings, Mr. George has made more presentations on behalf of the City to Wall Street municipal analysts than any other Lakewood official.
He has sponsored and passed numerous laws including Lakewood's Prevailing Wage Law, laws to protect city workers, laws to address distressed properties owned by absentee landlords and laws to combat excessive residential street speeding.
He is on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Municipal League, where he was recently named Vice-President, and the Board of Trustees of Lakewood Hospital. He is a member of the Lakewood Kiwanis Club, the Ohio State University Alumni Association and Advocates, the National League of Cities Committee for Energy, Natural Resources and Environment and an honorary member of the Lakewood/Rocky River Rotary.
Due to his expertise involving issues concerning inner ring suburbs such as Lakewood, in April, 2004 he was named to the First Tier Suburbs Council of the National League of Cities.
He has two children: Meghan, a student at Ohio State University, and Timothy who attends Ohio University. He and his wife, Jane, enjoy their Victorian home on Summit Avenue.
