William A. Eaton, a Minister Counselor in the career Senior Foreign Service, was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of State for Administration on July 13, 2001. Since joining the Department of State in 1979, he has served overseas as administrative counselor in Ankara, Turkey, administrative officer in Milan, Italy and Istanbul, Turkey, general services officer in Moscow, U.S.S.R., and political and consular officer in Georgetown, Guyana. In Washington, he has served as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Management, Executive Director of the Bureau of European Affairs, Coordinator in the Office of the Deputy Secretary of State for the establishment of science centers in Moscow and Kiev for former Soviet weapons scientists, and as Special Assistant to the Under Secretary of State for Management, and the Assistant Secretaries for Diplomatic Security and Administration.

Mr. Eaton left the Foreign Service from 1989 to 1992 and served as Executive Director and Director of International Operations of the Young Presidents' Organization, an international association of young chief executive officers of multi-million-dollar companies in nearly 80 countries.

A native of Winchester, Virginia, Mr. Eaton was an American Field Service Exchange Student in Diksmuide, Belgium from 1971-72. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Kentucky, Georgia and South Korea. Mr. Eaton graduated from the University of Virginia with High Distinction (Magna Cum Laude) in International Relations in 1978. After college and before being selected for the Foreign Service, he won a Virginia Press Association award for his writing as reporter/news editor for the Shenandoah Valley-Herald in Woodstock, Virginia.

Mr. Eaton's honors include the Presidential Meritorious Service Award, the Intelligence Community Seal Medallion, and the Honorary National Distinguished Principal Award for outstanding leadership in the field of international education. His Department of State awards include the Arnold L. Raphel Award for Mentoring, the Leamon R. Hunt Award for Administrative Excellence, and several Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards. He speaks Turkish, Italian, Dutch, Spanish and Russian.
