Info | Al Donovan was born in New Orleans in 1951.
He was raised by his grandmother after his father left home and his mother passed away.
After graduating from West Jefferson High School, Al paid his way through the University of New Orleans by working in the oil fields of the Gulf of Mexico. Al was elected as the President of the Liberal Arts College his senior year, was voted the "Most Outstanding History Major" for the 1968 academic year, was accepted into the national honor and leadership fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa, and graduated with a B.A. in history.
He then entered Loyola Law School and worked full time at night as an Assistant Bond Clerk in the Clerk of Criminal District Court's Office.
After law school, he was soon hired as an Assistant District Attorney in Jefferson Parish. During his tenure as a prosecutor, Al so successfully convicted murderers, arm robbers, and rapists that he ended his career with a 98% conviction rate.
Edwin Edwards offered Al the role of Attorney of Staff for the 1991 re-election campaign and then asked Al to become Executive Counsel to the Governor.
Al's duties included interacting with the Louisiana Legislature on practically every legislative and budgetary matter and handling the day-to-day problems that arose in every department of state government, in addition to being a single parent to two daughters.
As the Governor's chief legal advisor, Al represented the Governor on a multitude of major issues, including the renegotiation of the Superdome lease with the Saints and the creation of the Indian Gaming Compacts.
After Governor Edwards announced that he would not seek reelection, Al participated in the formation of two fiber optic/telecommunications companies which completed the first independent fiber optic system in New Orleans and provide all of the telecommunication needs of the British, German, and American troops in the war zones of the Balkans War.
Al's career in the oil and gas industry, as a felony prosecutor, as a high ranking official in state government, and as a successful businessman sets him apart from the rest of the potential candidates who may enter the race for Louisiana Attorney General. He's known as a person who can make good decisions on tough issues and understands that his decisions can affect the lives of others. He has always taken this responsibility very seriously and will always conduct himself in a manner that will make his two daughters, his family, his friends, and, ultimately, the voters of Louisiana, very proud.
