Info | BARNARD, Daniel Dewey, a Representative from New York; born in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Mass., July 16, 1797; attended the common schools and was graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., in 1818; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1821 and began practice in Rochester, N.Y.; prosecuting attorney of Monroe County in 1826; elected to the Twentieth Congress (March 4, 1827-March 3, 1829); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1828 to the Twenty-first Congress; traveled in Europe in 1831; moved to Albany, N.Y., in 1832 and continued the practice of law; member of the State assembly in 1838; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth, Twenty-seventh, and Twenty-eighth Congresses (March 4, 1839-March 3, 1845); chairman, Committee on the Judiciary (Twenty-seventh Congress); was not a candidate for reelection in 1844; appointed Minister to Prussia and served from September 3, 1850, to September 21, 1853; retired from active business pursuits in 1853 and engaged in literary pursuits; died in Albany, N.Y., April 24, 1861; interment in Albany Rural Cemetery.
