InfoAt forty seven years old Jim McDermott and has lived in Victoria for twenty five years and has enjoyed a rich and rewarding variety of experiences. He has been a successful small business owner, the authorized agent for a horse racing stable, and a union negotiator and secretary treasurer. He is currently employed as a Maintenance Technician at Royal Roads University. But the most cherished positions he has held have been in advocacy of special needs children.

In recent years he has devoted his time to lobbying for supported child care and extra supports for people with special needs. He has seen first-hand the difficulties faced by parents when attempting to elicit appropriate government services for their children from various ministries. In many cases, such as child poverty and child behavioural needs, prompt intervention is not only the kindest course of action but also the most financially responsible. Unfortunately the disturbing truth is that in British Columbia, children wait while their conditions worsen.

It was this knowledge, and an increasing sense that the previous NDP government was behaving not only callously but also irresponsibly, that led Jim to become the Proponent of the Initiative to create the Child Services Equality Act. This initiative was his first experience with direct democracy and although it ultimately failed, due largely to inherent barriers built into the mechanism, it proved to be a valuable learning experience and lead him to author the experiential report: Direct Democracy, BC’s Initiative Act Repair Manual. It was also an effort that left him with an appreciation of the difficulties faced by both groups and individuals seeking fair and just change which is why he was more than pleased with the results of the Citizens Assembly on Electoral Reform and the upcoming referendum to change our legislative selection process.

Jim believes that people with special needs and those who are economically disadvantaged deserve a strong voice in our legislature. He is determined to serve all of his constituents in a fair and honourable fashion. He believes that the Democratic Reform Party of British Columbia will provide this province with a government that is committed to true social justice and compassion for those less fortunate. He invites all concerned citizens to explore the party website where the policies and constitution are readily available.

His hobbies include reading, comedy movies, golf, tennis and working out at the gym. He was a former champion athlete in football, baseball and track and has coached baseball and football on the island.

Jim has lived in the riding of Victoria-Hillside for more than ten years with his wife Maureen and daughters’ Mariel and Darcy.
