Marcos Daniel Jiménez was sworn in as the 49th United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida on August 5, 2002, following his appointment by President George W. Bush with the advice and consent of the United States Senate. Congress established the office of the United States Attorney in 1789. Today, the United States Attorneys continue to represent the interests of the federal government in the federal judicial districts throughout the nation. As the United States Attorney, Mr. Jiménez is the chief federal law enforcement officer for the District.
Mr. Jiménez also serves as a Core City U.S. Attorney supervising one of the nine regions for the nation's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program. Miami is the Core City for OCDETF's Florida-Caribbean region, which covers all of Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, from January 2003 through March 2005, Mr. Jiménez served on the Attorney General's Advisory Committee, which provides advice and counsel to the Attorney General on law enforcement issues and provides a voice for the United States Attorneys in making Department policy.
Born in Havana, Cuba, Mr. Jiménez emigrated to the United States when he was eighteen months old. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Miami with a Bachelors of Arts degree in 1980. In 1983, he graduated third in his class from the University of Miami School of Law, where he was an associate editor of the University of Miami Law Review and was selected to teach legal writing, moot court and ethics.
After graduation, Mr. Jiménez worked in private practice before serving as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida from March 1989 until November 1992. During his initial term in the United States Attorney's Office, Mr. Jiménez served in the Narcotics and Economic Crimes Sections, and as a Deputy Chief of the Major Crimes Section. Prior to his Presidential appointment, Mr. Jiménez was an equity partner of the international law firm of White and Case LLP, where he specialized in complex commercial litigation and white-collar criminal defense. While in private practice, Mr. Jiménez was recognized for his community service, bar association efforts, and pro bono representation on behalf of the disadvantaged.
