Info | Carolyn Bunny Welsh of Chadds Ford, PA is the first woman to ever be elected Sheriff of Chester County. She is the only female sheriff in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and one of only 22 female sheriffs in the nation. She is also the first to be elected president of a class at the National Sheriffs Institute at the Department of Corrections in Longmont Colorado.
Sheriff Welsh attended Wesley College in Dover, Delaware and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She also studied at the School of Criminal Justice at Temple University in Philadelphia. She was formerly a Pennsylvania State Constable.
Sheriff Welsh holds many awards, honors and community positions. She was a past president of the Rotary Club of Concordville-Chadds Ford and has been on the Board of Directors since 1995.
Sheriff Welsh served on the Board of the Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry. She served as a Director for the Penn Mutual Insurance Company of West Chester and currently serves as a Chairman on the Chester County Industrial Development Authority.
Sheriff Welsh currently serves on the Board of the Chester County Prison and is a Director on the Board of the National Flag Foundation. Sheriff Welsh is Chairman of the Chester County Flag Foundation, which raised a 30’ x 60’ flag at Kerr Park in Downingtown on Memorial Day 2001. In 1997 Sheriff Welsh was named one of the Top 50 Women in Business in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Also in 1997 she received a Pennsylvania Senatorial Citation and a commendation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Her outstanding volunteer efforts in the community earned her the National "Eckerd 100 Women of 2000" award. In 2002 Sheriff Welsh received the prestigious "Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award" from the National Center for Women and Policing. In 2004 Sheriff Welsh was inducted into the "International Police Association's Hall of Fame." Among her many accomplishments, Sheriff Welsh is also a mother of four, and grandmother of six.
