Info | Jenny is the Green Party candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood; she was formerly Deputy Mayor of London, and is a Member of the London Assembly.
Jenny joined the Green Party in 1988, having marched with CND and worked as a volunteer for Shelter in the 1960s. She was Chair of the Green Party's National Executive 1994-97, and was elected to the London Assembly in 2000 and then re-elected in 2004. Jenny is vehemently against the war in Iraq.
At the GLA, Jenny has achieved success in many areas, often bringing about green initiatives through working with others. She persuaded the Metropolitan Police formally to prioritise road safety in response to rising death and injuries on London's roads, and has proved a powerful green voice in persuading Ken Livingstone to implement a range of green policies in London such as the creation of the London Food commission. London Food's first job is to write a strategy that will ensure sustainable, affordable organic food for Londoners, and will tackle the problems of food poverty and food miles, and head off the threat from GM crops.
Success was recognised in Jenny's appointment by Ken Livingstone as Deputy Mayor of London for 2003-04. In this role she championed the Mayors for Peace initiative by representing London on behalf of the Mayor at the conference held in New York in 2004, and will again this year, 2005. The conference is demanding full and immediate implementation of the Non Proliferation Treaty. As Deputy Mayor, Jenny drove forward the green agenda on issues such as transport, policing, and human rights, with achievements such as increased spending on road safety, walking and cycling.
Now returned to the Assembly's 'back benches', she and Darren Johnson have successfully negotiated changes to Ken Livingstone's GLA budget to fund Safe Routes to Schools, helping to both reduce traffic and improve children's health at the same time.
An effective and inspiring speaker, Jenny has addressed many professional gatherings, from economists to traffic engineers to food producers, championing her radical and sensible vision of green politics to a wide variety of audiences.
