Info | Councilman C. Vernon Gray is a native of Sunderland, Calvert County, Maryland. He attended W. Sampson Brooks High School in Prince Frederick, Maryland, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Morgan State University, Baltimore. He has a Master of Arts degree from Atlanta University and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
In 1982, Councilman Gray began his political career as the first African-American to be elected to the Howard County Council, and in 1998, he was elected to an unprecedented fifth term. He is currently Chairman of the Council, a position he also held in 1998, 1994, 1987, 1986 and 1984. Additionally, Councilman Gray has served as Chair of the Zoning Board and Chair of the Liquor Board.
