Info | Robert D. Prunetti was sworn in as Mercer County Executive on January 1, 1992 and was re-elected in 1995 for a second four-year term beginning January 1, 1996. After nearly two decades of public service, during which he served as Mercer County Budget Director, Director of Policy and Planning for the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Hopewell Township Administrator and Mercer County Freeholder, Prunetti views the position of County Executive as an opportunity to improve the quality of life for residents in New Jersey’s capital county.
Given his philosophy that government should act as a partner with the private sector and not as a competitor or obstacle, Prunetti forged a close relationship with Mercer’s business community that has enabled him to pursue an aggressive program of economic growth, job creation and urban redevelopment.
Bob Prunetti’s urban redevelopment projects have been specifically targeted to create an opportunity triangle linking the South Trenton Waterfront and Mercer County Waterfront Park; the Roebling Complex and Mercer County Arena; and the New Jersey State House Complex. Among Prunetti’s most visible accomplishments are the construction of Mercer County Waterfront Park along the Delaware River in Trenton, the home of the AA Trenton Thunder minor league baseball team. Mercer County Waterfront Park provided the anchor to a much larger waterfront redevelopment project including a newly restored fishing wharf, KatManDu - a restaurant and night club, and office and retail space. The second phase of this project will include a boat dock, an ampitheatre, the redesign of Route 29 and other public access amenities.
In December of 1997, ground was broken for a 10,500 seat multi-purpose arena which will be the home of the Trenton Titans, an East Coast Hockey League expansion team and the Shooting Stars, an International Basketball League expansion team and will accomodate a variety of entertainment events. Prunetti has also been intricately involved in the Roebling Market Complex, which includes a supermarket, a restaurant and various retail stores. In addition, Prunetti has worked cooperatively with Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer and Governor Whitman to bring a hotel and conference center to the State House area.
Recognizing the opportunities of our increasingly global economy, Prunetti established a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) and International Trade Center located at Trenton-Mercer Airport. The county operated airport is a center of activity with two commercial airlines, Eastwind and Shuttle America, and with plans calling for an upgraded terminal and increased economic opportunities surrounding the airport including a family entertainment center.
In order to maintain the unique quality of life that Mercer County offers, Prunetti has implemented an aggressive open space and managed growth program. Over 7000 acres of open space have been preserved through the Mercer County Open Space Preservation Trust Fund which was established through one of the first local referendum in the state of New Jersey and overwhelmingly approved by voters county-wide. Two of Prunetti’s largest open space projects include plans for a second comprehensive county park, Mercer County Park Northwest, totaling 1650 acres; and the acquisition of Baldpate Mountain, a 1,100 acre parcel that is environmentally unique and will be modestly improved for passive recreation opportunities.
Committed to "Smart Government", the Prunetti administration believes that government does not have to be expensive to be effective and has kept taxes stable since 1994. This year, Prunetti has submitted a budget with $7 million in savings and a significant tax cut.
Bob Prunetti, a graduate of Trenton High School, the College of New Jersey and New York University, lives in Ewing with his wife Maryanne and their two children, Dominique and Robert, Jr. Bob is active in numerous charitable and service activities; most notably the March of Dimes, for which he serves as regional Chairman, the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, Women’s Heart Research Fund, founded the Mercer County Commission on Abused Neglected and Missing Children, the National-Italian-American Foundation, and the New Jersey Association of Counties, for which he serves as Chairman of their Solid Waste Committee. Prunetti has been honored by MSM (a Mercer, Somerset, Middlesex Regional Planning Organization), Lawrence Township Neighborhood Service Center, Trenton Roebling Redevelopment Corporation, and has received the National Jewish Federation’s, "Tree of Life Award" through which a commemorative 10,000 tree forest was planted in Israel.
