InfoColonel Gene McVay is Commander of the 188th Support Group at the 188th Fighter Wing, Fort Smith. He directs the activities of approximately 350 personnel assigned to five subordinate squadrons and flights including Personnel, Engineering, Security, Communications and Services.

Colonel McVay was born March 15, 1942 in Mountain Home, Arkansas and graduated from Mountain Home High School in 1961. He received an Associate of Arts Degree from Southern Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas and a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Aviation from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. He is a graduate of Air University's Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College.

After graduating from high school, Colonel McVay enlisted in the United States Air Force and was trained as an Intelligence Analyst at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas. Following nine months training he was assigned to Wakkanai, Japan. His next assignment was at the National Security Agency near Washington, D. C.

In 1965 Colonel McVay was honorably discharged from the Air Force and entered college. He was then commissioned in the Arkansas Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserves in 1967. In June of that year, he began Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma and received training in the T-41, T-37 and T-38 aircraft. He received his wings in June of 1968 during the height of the Vietnam conflict. Colonel McVay volunteered for 24 months active duty to help alleviate a critical pilot shortage. He was assigned to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California where he flew the C-141 "Starlifter". Colonel McVay became the only First Lieutenant Aircraft Commander in the unit and flew 50 combat missions in Southeast Asia before returning to the Arkansas Air National Guard in 1970. Back in Arkansas, Colonel McVay began flying the T-33 when the unit received notice of an aircraft conversion from the FR-84 to the F-101 "Voodoo". He became the first combat ready RF-101 pilot in the unit and was subsequently upgraded to Instructor Pilot while still a First Lieutenant.

As a Captain he became a Flight Commander in the 184th Fighter Squadron while flying the F-100 "Super Saber". He also served as Chief of Safety, Chief of Command and Control, Chief of Plans, Deputy Commander for Operations and Operations Group Commander before assuming his current responsibilities. Colonel McVay flew the C-12, the F-4 "Phantom" and the F-16 "Fighting Falcon" as an instructor pilot. Most recently he served as the first Air National Guard Provisional Wing Commander for Pacific Air Forces premier training exercise "Cope Thunder".

Colonel McVay served as President of the National Guard Association of Arkansas ion, he

served as Chairman for the Arthritis Television Auction, member Sparks Regional Hospital Advisory Trustee Board and very active in many charitable organizations. He has held positions on the County Election Board, Tax Equalization Board and currently serves on the County Parks and Recreation Board.

Colonel McVay is a Command Pilot with over 4,000 jet flying hours. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters.

Colonel McVay is married to the former Magda Bostoen of Rouselare, Belgium. They have one daughter, Marcene. He served as the forty-fifth President of the National Guard Association of Arkansas 1985-86.
