Info | For over two decades, Freman Hendrix has gotten important things done for the people and families of Detroit and Wayne County. Now after an important three-year turn in the private sector, Hendrix has spent the past year traveling the neighborhoods of Detroit, meeting with citizens to hear their thoughts and concerns about the city, and sharing with them his prescriptive solutions to the serious challenges currently facing the Detroit community.
These solutions were formulated, in part, as a result of his nearly eight years of hands-on experience with the Archer administration, where he played a key role in Detroit's resurgence. As Chief of Staff and then Deputy Mayor, Hendrix shaped policy and planning for 43 departments and 17,000 employees who provide essential services to nearly one million Detroit residents. His skillful management also helped lead the City to its first balanced budget in years, and an unprecedented and continuous upgrading of Detroit's national bond rating.
As Chairman of the reorganized Detroit Board of Education from March 1999 through November 2000, Hendrix's leadership was central in the initial efforts to rebuild and reinvigorate the city's troubled school system. Throughout his 19 months of service to Detroit's school children, Hendrix over-saw the drafting of the School Improvement Plan, the district's blueprint for improved academic achievement, and was instrumental in the hiring of a permanent Chief Executive Officer to execute that plan. Hendrix's commitment to improving the quality of the educational experience for the children of the Detroit Public Schools also led him to refocus district resources to begin improving school security, reducing class sizes and improving the learning environment for more than 160,000 students.
Prior to joining the Archer administration, Hendrix held important posts in Wayne County government. Starting as Director of Community Development, Hendrix was soon appointed Assistant County Executive for Legislative Affairs, where he was responsible for advancing Wayne County's interests at the state and federal levels.
In addition to his significant accomplishments in public service, Hendrix has emerged as one of the top political leaders in the state of Michigan. A former member of the Democratic National Committee, Hendrix served as a delegate to the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Democratic National Conventions, and as an elector in the Michigan Electoral College in 1996 and 2000. Hendrix managed both of Dennis Archer's successful mayoral campaigns. In 1996, President Clinton and Vice President Gore tapped Hendrix to lead their successful statewide re-election, making him the first African-American to head a successful presidential campaign in the state of Michigan.
Having heard the call to public service more than 25 years ago, Hendrix began his employment in government in an entry level position in the City of Detroit's Finance Department. Through extensive training and leadership development, Hendrix achieved great success, ascending to the top of his field. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Freman Hendrix earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University.
A long-time community activist who co-founded the Rosedale-Grandmont Little League Baseball Program for 700 boys and girls, Hendrix is a life member of the NAACP, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and 100 Black Men of Greater Detroit. He and his wife, Elaine, reside in North Rosedale Park and are members of Christ the King Church. They have two children – Erin, a University of Michigan graduate, and Stephen, a junior at U of M’s Business School.
