Kate Hanley was re-elected Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in November, 1999. She was first elected Chairman during a special election held in February, 1995. Prior to her election as Chairman, she represented Providence District on the Board of Supervisors. She was first elected Providence District Supervisor in 1986, and re-elected in 1987 and 1991. Before serving on the Board of Supervisors, she served one term on the Fairfax County School Board.
Chairman Hanley serves on the following boards and committees:

Chairman Hanley was previously employed as a counselor at the University of Missouri and as a teacher and guidance counselor for the City of Falls Church public schools. She was a small business owner/operator of a hardware store.

Chairman Hanley has been a member of the Fairfax County Child Care Advisory Council, the Citizens' Committee on Changing Enrollment in Secondary Schools, the Fairfax County Community Action Advisory Board, and numerous other civic organizations; vice chairman of the Fairfax County Superintendent's Community Advisory Council; and president of the Holmes Run Woods and Crossing Civic Association.

Chairman Hanley received a B.A. degree in French Civilization and a B.S. degree in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri where she was Phi Beta Kappa. She received her M.A.T. from Harvard University in Social Science. She is married to Edward Hanley and they have two children.
