Senator Carlson has been a voice for responsible environmental policy and education issues during his career in the legislature, winning repeatedly in a Democratic-leaning district.

Senator Carlson is a board member on the Mainstream Republicans of Washington, as well as a member of the Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.

Carlson was narrowly defeated for reelection to the state senate by Democratic County Commissioner Craig Pridemore in 2004.
