Info | Graduated with a BA from Western Washington University in 1961, and achieved a Masters' degree from WWU in 1967. Married to Janice, with two sons and six grandchildren. Former teacher in the Vancouver School District, for 31 years, and citizenship instructor at Clark College. He also coached softball and tennis while teaching. Senator Carlson has been a voice for responsible environmental policy and education issues during his career in the legislature, winning repeatedly in a Democratic-leaning district.
Senator Carlson is a board member on the Mainstream Republicans of Washington, as well as a member of the Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.
Carlson was narrowly defeated for reelection to the state senate by Democratic County Commissioner Craig Pridemore in 2004.
