| Info | David M. Carter was a prominent attorney in North Carolina after the Civil War. Born in Hyde County, he later relocated to Washington NC. He served as a colonel in the Confederate Army, taking an African American he held in bondage. Carter was nearly killed in battle, but his man in bondage carried him off the battlefield and nursed him back to health. After the Civil War, Carter ran for Congress on the Conservative Party ticket. In the mid-1870s, he moved to Raleigh. He died while on a trip to Baltimore MD in early 1879.
