Jerry Springer was born in London in 1944 as his family fled from the Holocaust. When Jerry was five years old, he and his family boarded the Queen Mary and immigrated to the United States. He grew up in Queens, New York, where his mom was a bank clerk and his father a street vendor who sold stuffed animals.
After graduating from Northwestern University Law School in 1968, Jerry Springer served in Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign. After Kennedy?s assassination, Jerry began practicing law in Cincinnati.
But his love was politics, and he jumped back into the fray as a leader in the movement to lower the voting age from 21 to 18, he testified before a U.S. Senate committee prior to the 1971 passage of the 26th Amendment, which changed the voting age to 18. In 1971, he ran successfully for Cincinnati?s City Council and served for five successive terms. In 1977, at the age of 33, Jerry became Mayor of Cincinnati with the most votes in the city?s history.
After an Democratic primary bid for Governor of Ohio in 1982, Jerry became a political reporter and commentator for the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati. Over the next 10 years, Springer was the top rated news anchor in the city and the recipient of seven Emmy awards for his nightly commentaries. As anchor, Springer is most proud of his reporting from Ethiopia and Sudan where he documented the efforts to provide assistance to famine-stricken Africans.
The Jerry Springer Show debuted in 1991. It is seen in more that 190 US markets and more than 50 foreign countries. In addition to the show, Jerry has also hosted a late night television variety show in England, and has guest hosted London?s morning news show.
