Info | WILLARD, Charles Wesley, a Representative from Vermont; born in Lyndon, Caledonia County, Vt., June 18, 1827; was graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1851; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Montpelier in 1853; secretary of state of Vermont 1855 and 1856; declined a reelection; member of the State senate 1860 and 1861; became editor and publisher of the Montpelier Freeman in 1861; elected as a Republican to the Forty-first, Forty-second, and Forty-third Congresses (March 4, 1869-March 3, 1875); chairman, Committee on Revolutionary Pensions (Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1874 to the Forty-third Congress; resumed the practice of law in Montpelier; member of the commission to revise the laws of Vermont in 1879 and 1880; died in Montpelier, Vt., on June 8, 1880; interment in Green Mount Cemetery.
