Info | JONKMAN, Bartel John, a Representative from Michigan; born in Grand Rapids, Mich., April 28, 1884; attended the public schools and was graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1914; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Grand Rapids, Mich.; assistant prosecutor of Kent County, Mich., 1915-1920 and prosecuting attorney 1929-1936; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Carl E. Mapes; reelected to the Seventy-seventh and to the three succeeding Congresses and served from February 19, 1940, to January 3, 1949; unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1948; resumed the practice of law; died in Grand Rapids, Mich., June 13, 1955; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
