| Info | Jan Backus studied at the University of Vermont, University of Adelaide, South Australia and Kilkenny Technical College, South Australia. She was first elected to the Vermont Senate from Windham County in 1988, after serving six years on the Brattleboro Supervisory Union School Board. Backus ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 1994, and in 1996 she won another seat in the Vermont Senate. In 2000, she very narrowly lost the U.S. Senate primary to State Auditor Ed Flanagan (D).
