InfoJohn W. Lavelle currently represents the 61st District, which is located on the North Shore of Staten Island. Lavelle was first elected in November of 2000. He had filled the seat vacated by retired Assemblywoman Betty Connelly, who had spent over 27 years fighting for Staten Island families.

As a long-time resident of West Brighton, Assemblyman Lavelle has spent much of his life fighting for local families. He has an impressive record of community service and extensive political experience. A founding member of the Brighton Kiwanis Club, John has taken the lead on countless public service projects since the 1970's. He chaired the Staten Island Continuum of Education, the Silver Lake Area Committee of Community Board One, and the Board of the Veterans Action Coalition. In 1993, he was appointed to the New York State Charter Commission for the City of Staten Island.

In addition, Assemblyman Lavelle spent over 20 years working for quality health care by serving on the Community Advisory Board for the Sisters of Charity Health Care System at St. Vincent's Medical Center. He started a monthly recreation program for patients at Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home, and served as Chairman of the Center's Advisory Board. He has also helped substance abusers get their lives back on track by serving as vice chair of the Camelot Counseling Center's Board of Directors.

Since taking office, Lavelle has made education his top priority in Albany. During the 2002 03 state budget negotiations, John worked to secure an additional $600 million for New York City Schools. This funding is used to help New York City balance its multi-million dollar budget gap and ensure schools have the resources they need. Lavelle also fought for a budget that includes funding for the Assemblys LADDER program. This program is used to fund full-day kindergarten and provides a $1 million increase to both Teachers Centers and Teacher Mentor Programs.

For the 2003-04 Legislative session, Assemblyman John Lavelle serves on the following committees; Education, Mental Health, Government Employees, Social Services, Transportation and Veterans Affairs. Through these committees, Lavelle will continue to fight for the issues important to Staten Island families.

Assemblyman Lavelle is the proud father of three grown sons, John, Christopher and Danny. He is also grandfather of two sons, Jacob and Zachary
