InfoCarmela Conroy is a third-generation union member, born and raised in the Inland Northwest by parents born and raised here. As a kid she helped in the family garden, learned to swim at Newman Lake, and participated in 4H. Active in band, debate, and student government, she graduated from Central Valley High School.

After working her way through college and law school Carmela returned home to be a deputy prosecutor for Spokane County. In District Court she held accountable drunk drivers and violent offenders, and in Juvenile Court sought justice for victims of special assaults.

After four years of seeking justice for the People, Carmela joined the U.S. Foreign Service, spending most of her career alongside the Military in countries such as Afghanistan, Japan, Norway, and Pakistan. She sat in on Secretary Colin Powell’s calls after 9/11 and was Consul General in Lahore, Pakistan when the U.S. finally caught Osama bin Laden.

She negotiated international agreements, led multinational teams of up to hundreds of people, and ran facilities with multimillion dollar budgets. Having sworn to defend the U.S. Constitution, and guided by the values instilled at home, she served with distinction under four presidents across seven administrations.

Three years into the administration of President Donald J. Trump, Carmela retired from federal service. She saw firsthand the damage it inflicted on the United States and its constitutional institutions and determined she could better defend our democracy from outside federal service. She took a 60% pay cut to regain 100% of her free speech rights.

Since returning home, Carmela has been working to build awareness of the power of our votes to hold elected leaders accountable to the law and ensure they actually serve our government of, by, and for the people. She volunteers with the Gonzaga University School of Law and with the local League of Women Voters, helping to grow early awareness of civics and civil rights.

In 2022 the Spokane County Democrats elected and reelected her chair by acclamation, and she spent 2022 and 2023 helping elect candidates who support organized labor, access to the full range of reproductive rights, adapting to and mitigating the climate crisis, and investing to better connect urban and rural areas.

Now Carmela intends to represent everyone in Washington’s 5th Congressional District, fighting for the Inland Northwest in D.C. Won’t you join her in the fight?
